TANGO 101 | TANGO for BEGINNERS

NEW to TANGO? Don't worry. We hope that we have the answers to your questions.

Q. I DON'T HAVE A PARTNER. IS IT A PROBLEM?

You won't need to come with a partner to Tango Socials / Milongas. We usually help students to find a partner for Tango lessons. Tango is a social dance, we dance, we meet new and old friends.  Dancers usually go to a Milonga (a Tango Dance Party) to dance with friends or even dancers that they have never met. And you will meet a lot of beautiful dancers to learn in class and parties.

Q. ANYTHING ELSE TO BE AWARE OF?

Yes, basic etiquette & hygiene. Tango dance is elegant and sensual. We dance very close to our partners in an embrace. You need to be polite, presentable & clean. Take shower, wash your hair, brush your teeth. If you come straight from work, please bring soap, towel and extra clean shirts with you. Wash yourself, change to clean clothes and put on deodorant. Perfume is optional, and please be aware that some people may be allergic to some types of perfume.  Avoid garlic & onion before tango. Dancers usually carry toothbrush, toothpaste and extra breath fresheners.

Q. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN TANGO?

Dancers who are taking tango classes in our school usually progress 3 times faster.  But still, same as learning any new skill, it takes dedication and practice. Tango is a "walking" dance, which is natural to most people. However, to walk like Tango dance, it is quality, not quantity. Our advice is - enjoy the journey.
It is good to learn fast, but even better, to learn Tango properly. Just enjoy every moment of meeting new friends and have fun in tango classes and parties.

WHAT CLOTHES OR SHOES SHOULD I WEAR ?

Simply come with comfortable clothes and please bring a pair of shoes that allow you to glide and spin easily. Usually leather bottom soles works perfect.

Note that snow boots rubber sneakers or wet shoes/snow boots are NOT allowed on dance floor for the safety of you and other dancers.

Q. ARE FOLLOWERS SUPPOSED TO WEAR TANGO HEELS?

Not really. Tango shoes are pretty and never short of choices. In tango socials, a good pair of tango shoes can make your footwork stand out in the crowd. Though to dance tango, eg. in Tango classes or workshops, it is better to wear spinable dance sneakers, jazz shoes and ballet flat etc, especially if you are new in Tango dance. Tango shoes can facilitate pivots, but take your time to shop for a gorgeous pair.
Some good tango shoes brands: Odile Tango Shoes (Korea), Valentina Tango Shoes(Argentina), Madam Pivot (Italy), Madreselva Tango Shoes (Argentina),
Best Tango Shoes For Men : Fabio Tango Shoes and 2x4 Al Pie (Argentina)

Q. I WANT TO MEET A GIRLFRIEND OR BOYFRIEND

Beautiful things do happen in life. Many students met in our studio are now happily married. But it is NOT a good idea to learn Tango for this reason.

There are a lot beautiful people (inside and out) in our tango school, we are very welcoming and you are encourage to meet new friends & socialize in parties.

**Just note that we do our best to provide a safe space for everyone to enjoy their Tango journey.  We do not allow any form of solicitation or unwanted advances.
